Idaho Health Data Exchange Launches Image Exchange with Saint Alphonsus Health System

Idaho clinicians can access SAHS diagnostic-quality images, instantly through the IHDE

Boise, Idaho, November 4, 2014 – The Idaho Health Data Exchange (IHDE) and Saint Alphonsus Health System (SAHS) announced today the launch of Image Exchange viewing capability by eHealth Technologies.

Image Exchange allows IHDE-authorized physicians, hospitals and clinicians to instantly access, view and collaborate on their patients’ SAHS diagnostic-quality images from the IHDE through a secure, universal web application. Powered by eHealth Technologies, images including X-rays, MRIs, CT scans, PET scans and ultrasounds that traditionally take hours or days to procure, are now available within seconds from the IHDE via Image Exchange. All images are available where and when they are needed, saving health care dollars from being wasted on unnecessary duplicated imaging procedures and time spent waiting to receive film copies, large file transfers or cd’s.

“The IHDE is excited to be able to offer participants this new functionality,” said Scott Carrell, Executive Director, Idaho Health Data Exchange. “It further develops IHDE’s ability to assist health care providers by providing them with easy access to images for the treatment of their patients.”

“We always strive to provide the very best in information security, accessibility, and convenience for our clinicians and patients,” said Rick Turner, MD, Chief Medical Information Officer at Saint Alphonsus Health System. “The Image Exchange is a positive step in achieving the best in patient care and universal access, and we are proud to be able to work with eHealthTechnologies and the Idaho Health Data Exchange in making the new technology a reality.”

“We are excited to be providing IHDE with the convenience of single click access to any diagnostic-quality image, right from the context of the patients’ record,” said Ken Rosenfeld, Chief Executive Officer and President, eHealthTechnologies. “IHDE and Saint Alphonsus Health System have joined a cadre of HIEs and hospitals, from coast to coast, who are realizing that sharing diagnostic-quality medical images is not only an effective way to provide better care and decrease cost, but is also very easy and quick to deploy.”

Idaho physicians using the IHDE Image Exchange feature can get easier and quicker access to images versus the traditional way of logging onto multiple sites, or calling and faxing in requests to hospitals’ imaging and medical records departments and independent imaging centers – and then waiting for cd’s to be burned and sent via mail, courier or with the patient.  As soon as an image has been signed off by a radiologist, it is available and accessible via the IHDE Image Exchange within seconds.

IHDE-Orion Health Go-Live Postponement

Tuesday, September 16, 2014     Project Update

IHDE – Orion Health “Go-Live” date has been postponed

The original September 30th planned “go-live” date on to the new IHDE-Orion Health HIE platform has been postponed. This decision is a result of several factors which confirm that this transition is very complex. This postponement, however, will result in a smoother transition and improved product performance for all customers. In the meantime, be assured that the IHDE Virtual Health Record (VHR) is fully functional and will continue in operation until further word from us.

A revised implementation timeline and specific date for the go-live date will be forthcoming. As we move closer to completion, we will announce training dates and locations for enrollment.

Should you have questions or concerns about this change, feel free to contact me at 208-332-7253 or at scarrell@idahohde.org

Thank you for your continued support for this essential service enhancement.

What other additional functionality and features will be available with Orion Health?

While the initial focus with the transition to Orion Health will be to ensure that all current functionality is in place when launched, there will be some new features and functions that will be part of the overall Orion Health solution. Some of this functionality will be available immediately; some will be rolled-out after the launch (see March 2014 announcement letter). We will keep you informed of these updates.

Will the IHDE be “down” when this change occurs?

No, the plan is to run both systems in parallel until the cut over to the new system.

We are developing a detailed communication and training plan for all participants. IHDE staff will be arranging information and planning sessions with each participant to discuss the change and to plan its implementation. We will also post information and updates to our website and distribute via email.

Will all the current information and services of the clinical portal exist with Orion Health?

Yes…and then some. We plan to keep the existing connections in place until the designated cutover date.  As we configure and build the Orion platform, the existing data feeds will be routed to the new Orion Health platform. We will be running the two systems in parallel as we perform the validation, testing and staging processes. Similar to the existing VHR, Orion Health has a clinical portal for access and viewing of consolidated patient records. There will be additional functionality with the Orion clinical portal including a customizable configuration specific for each participant, provider messaging, etc.

What is the approach to transitioning the current inbound and outbound data feeds from hospitals, provider practices, laboratories and payers?

We plan to keep the existing connections in place with the current vendor and continue the data flowing until an ultimate cutover to the new system is ready. As we configure and implement the new Orion Health platform, the existing inbound data feeds will be routed not only to existing platform but also to Orion Health. The environment with Orion Health will be built and run in parallel to the existing system. Re-direction, testing and validation of the data feeds into Orion Health will be performed by IHDE Integration staff with the desire to minimize the need for data source staff efforts. However, IHDE Staff will need to work closely with our clients during the testing and validation phases. As we obtain more detail about this transition with Orion, we will be communicating more details.

What factors were important in making the decision to change to Orion Health?

  • Feedback from our customers helped guide us through this decision-making process
  • Better technology, greater system flexibility and a long-term vision for delivering high value HIE solutions
  • Need for additional HIE functions and capabilities including notifications/alerts, CCD exchange, clinical messaging, DIRECT secure mail exchange with providers, etc.
  • Support for healthcare facilities and providers to meet Meaningful Use objectives
